How Growth-Driven Design Impacts Your Sales Process (And Why You Shouldn't Ignore It)

When I first got into digital marketing as a career change a few years back (I had previously worked as a financial advisor and had a brief stint starting a study-abroad program for a Chinese government contracted company) I thought the term ‘growth driven design’ was a bit haughty. It reminded me of an interview I once read with a favorite musician of mine, who was labeled in the music press as an IDM artist, the acronym standing for ‘intelligent dance music’. The artist’s response, and of course I need to paraphrase here, was: “Intelligent dance music? It makes it sound like other types of dance music aren’t as intelligent as this kind. A bit nasty, innit?” (He was English, and “innit” was the only part I didn’t need to paraphrase, as it’s humorous to read it online when one is a guy born and raised in the US.) I agreed with his perspective, and felt the same way when ‘growth driven design’ and ‘GDD’ first began exploding on marketing blogs left and right, bandied about like free c

Foscarini Launches Table Lamps Inspired by Birds

Image
has launched a new lighting design collection designed by Ludovica and Roberto Palmoba. The Birdie table lamp collection features two new eye-catching and affordable models: Birdie Easy and Birdie Zero. The design's iconic shade is a geometric interpretation of a bird resting on a tree branch, recalling the image of a traditional bedside lamp but with a slightly tapered shape. The stem and the base of the lamp are linear and have been given new proportions to enhance this classic design, which comes in six new colors. Thanks to the base and rod in metal, Birdie Easy readily adapts to the widest range of stylistic and functional settings. Birdie Zero accentuates the minimal look of the lamp, keeping only the shade, in the large and small versions.

Glitch & Displace

Image
Glitching refers to some kind of digital distortion that you might see when something goes wrong on an image or video, creating distortions or errors on the image in an ‘unintended’ way. Flipping this on its head and intentionally adding some form of glitching or pixelation to your project is a great way to build the VHS style. Obviously, glitches can present themselves in various ways, so this leaves some scope for creative expression, but commonly some type of displacement, chromatic aberration, or RBG shifting effects should work nicely, but essentially you want certain strips of the image to appear shifted and discolored. This set of   VHS Glitch Effects for Photoshop   by   Designdell   serves as a great example. Again, there are a lot of different ways this can be done, but emulating retro film styles around the era th

Introducing Ultimate Gray and Illuminating: Pantone's Colors of the Year for 2021

Image
There is   strength in optimism . Or at least that's Pantone's proposal for 2021: a color story that combines vitality and fortitude. The resilience we'll need to overcome 2020's challenges and the vivacious energy that will inspire us to do it. In selecting Ultimate Gray and Illuminating (Yellow) as their colors of the year for 2021, Pantone hopes to convey a mix of temperance and warmth. In the last few years, we've gotten used to seeing a single hue as Pantone's Color of the Year. Perhaps as evidence of our conflicting emotions, this year's color pair invites us to embrace the value of our differences. Creatives' reactions to this choice are divided, to say the least. We're used to adding white to create tints, gray to create tones, and black to create shades. Many use gray as a tool to precisely  reduce  chroma, or neutralize colorfulness; so seeing it as one of 2021's most influential color picks creates mixed feelings. However, regardless
